Basically, there are two types of tolls in Europe: distance-related toll and the time-bound vignette. With distance-based tolls, you do not always have to pay on the entire motorway and expressway network. There are also different rules as to whether you have to pay when entering or exiting. In some countries, electronic payment systems are also used. You buy the vignette in advance. It is available at border crossings in all sales points with a vignette symbol and also at petrol stations and post offices, for example. The fee is then due at the respective sections of the route.
Emission zones – driving bans in Europe
Driving bans for specific vehicle groups have become more common in Europe for some time now. There is no specific regulation for Europe, but you should find out about possible driving bans or exceptions before traveling to these countries.
